I am having a problem with HQ Admin after upgrading to SQL Server Express on
my HQ Server computer (running 1.3R). HQ Admin works fine in all respects
from this computer. However, when I try to run HQ Admin from any other
computer on the network I get this error when I try to connect:

To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL
Server Management Objects(SMO)

I can run HQ manager and enter the configuration fine. However, I am
restricted from connecting (so I can't run SQL queries). Any ideas?

Apparently I am not alone... I found this old post on Google Groups, but did
not find an answer:

Subject: SQL problems with 2.0
This is a weird database problem that has occured since upgrading to 2.0 -

We have been running 2.0 for a couple weeks now. Today I decided to look
more into my backup problem and try some other things. So I open
Administrator on my desktop, and try to "connect" to my database - It gives
me an error "To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management
Studio or SQL Server Management Objects(SMO)." If I put in the wrong
password, it of course says "Login failed for user 'sa'".

Now if I go into "configuration" and click the "test database connection"
button, it connects fine. Manager works fine as well. This is true for all
my
machines -

Now - we did install 2.0 on a test machine for a couple days before doing
the whole store - on that machine my partner installed some additional SQL
tools, and when I try the above tests there, I can "connect" to the database
from Administrator without a problem. But if I try to run the backup utility
from Administrator, I get this error message -

"Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_itemlookup" is not permitted because it
is not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses
to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_subitems" is not permitted because it is
not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally."

This is the same message I get on my other machines when I try to run the
Backup from Manager -

The database is running on a SBS2003 server, all machines XP PRo, everything
up to date - All I want to do is backup my database simply and cleanly -
Any
ideas?? Please????

To clarify, I did this on the client computer (not the HQ Server). It =
worked perfectly. Thank you.

Regarding the KB article... Who has that kind of time? The average store =
owner would not have the time or patience to read that...

Anyone have an opinion on the "next best thing" to RMS? I am really =
getting tired of having to become a computer tech to run a three store =

Jason,

Part of your problem is that you are trying to save money by becoming a =
computer tech instead of paying the computer techs to do a proper, =
competent job.

This is a known issue since before the KB was written. We, along with =
MBS and other resellers, helped create it and a competent RMS reseller =
would have known about and advised you how and when to do it or would =
have done it for you. Sure it would have cost you some money, but it =
would have been faster and maybe cheaper (how much do you make an hour) =
to do.

Apparently I am not alone... I found this old post on Google =

not find an answer:

Subject: SQL problems with 2.0
This is a weird database problem that has occured since upgrading =
to 2.0 -

We have been running 2.0 for a couple weeks now. Today I decided =
to look
more into my backup problem and try some other things. So I open
Administrator on my desktop, and try to "connect" to my database - =
It gives
me an error "To connect to this server you must use SQL Server =
Management
Studio or SQL Server Management Objects(SMO)." If I put in the =
wrong
password, it of course says "Login failed for user 'sa'".

Now if I go into "configuration" and click the "test database =
connection"
button, it connects fine. Manager works fine as well. This is true =
for all=20
my
machines -

Now - we did install 2.0 on a test machine for a couple days =
before doing
the whole store - on that machine my partner installed some =
additional SQL
tools, and when I try the above tests there, I can "connect" to =
the database
from Administrator without a problem. But if I try to run the =
backup utility
from Administrator, I get this error message -

"Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_itemlookup" is not permitted =
because it
is not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or FILE =
clauses=20
to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_subitems" is not permitted =
because it is
not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or FILE =
clauses to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally."

This is the same message I get on my other machines when I try to =
run the
Backup from Manager -

The database is running on a SBS2003 server, all machines XP PRo, =
everything
up to date - All I want to do is backup my database simply and =
cleanly -=20
Any
ideas?? Please????

If I wanted to save money, I woudn't have purchased RMS in the first =
place. The problem is that the software is designed to create ongoing =
expenses without an end in sight. There will never be a point that I can =
just stop expending money, even if my business is not growing. If i want =
to add lanes or stores now, I am FORCED to upgrade. Ig my database grows =
too large, there is nothing I can do except call my reseller (unless I =
become a tech myself). Other POS packages are far less expensive in the =
long run.

Bottom Line: If RMS requires the Backward Compatibility Client and SQL =
Native Client to run on SQL Server Express or SQL server, then it should =
be installed automatically or it should be documented. And how hard can =
it be to alert the user that the database limit is approaching?!

When I pop an Intuit disk into my drive to upgrade Quickbooks, i just =
hit the next button a few times. I am willing to bet QB POS is the same. =
My experience with several other POS packages (some more expensive, some =
less) has been that upgrades WORK without having to do a bunch of =
underlying technical stuff. Pop the disk in - voila - upgraded!

And FYI, I have been through 6 resellers, and all were useless. I have =
tried the maintenance plan route (where I rarely had issues resolved) =
and the ala carte route where I rarely paid anything because issues were =
apparently too hard for them to tackle (but easy enough for me to figure =
out using some persistence and research). I am far off the beaten path, =
where physical visits from a reseller are virtually impossible. All =
attempts to do things via phone or Internet were fruitless. You can see =
why I am hesitant to pay a dime to a reseller, be it ala carte or on a =
maintenance plan. Is my reseller going to check my database regularly to =
see if I am approaching the size limit? Is that something you do for =
your customers?

I have gained light-years more distance in this forum than with all =
resellers combined, and I am fully capable of accomplishing the tasks =
requierd to maintain my software... If Microsoft would just document =
their products properly and make them work as expected, there would be =
no problem.=20

So don't fault me for "trying to save money." I am indeed saving money, =
but more importantly I am getting the job DONE... That's less than I can =
say for some of the "professionals." Care to elaborate on the other =
"parts of my problem," Jeff?

Jason,

Part of your problem is that you are trying to save money by becoming =
a computer tech instead of paying the computer techs to do a proper, =
competent job.

This is a known issue since before the KB was written. We, along with =
MBS and other resellers, helped create it and a competent RMS reseller =
would have known about and advised you how and when to do it or would =
have done it for you. Sure it would have cost you some money, but it =
would have been faster and maybe cheaper (how much do you make an hour) =
to do.

tools, and when I try the above tests there, I can "connect" to =
the database
from Administrator without a problem. But if I try to run the =
backup utility
from Administrator, I get this error message -

"Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_itemlookup" is not permitted =
because it
is not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or =
FILE clauses=20
to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
Backup of file or filegroup "sysft_subitems" is not permitted =
because it is
not online. BACKUP can be performed using the FILEGROUP or FILE =
clauses to
restrict the selection to include only online data.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally."

This is the same message I get on my other machines when I try =
to run the
Backup from Manager -

The database is running on a SBS2003 server, all machines XP =
PRo, everything
up to date - All I want to do is backup my database simply and =
cleanly -=20
Any
ideas?? Please????
