MS POS2, scanners and receipt search

Hi all,

I have read on this group that in POS2, scanners should be added to the till
device list.
I have a USB scanner which XP sees as a HID but does not show up in the till
as a new device, however the scanning works ok apart from the receipt scan
which is supposed to locate the receipt transaction but fails miserably.
Could this be because the scanner is not included as a till device?
Also to use a USB scanner do I need a virtual com port for the OPOS driver
to make it available as a device?

Any advice or comments will be gratefully received.

Not sure about POS2 but we use a usb scanner in RMS 2.0 and use the HID
drive with no virtual com port shown and it works perfectly.
The scanner is a Metrolgic 9540
