I believe Microsoft recommends running RMS using MSDE on less than 6 POS
terminals. Does anyone have experience running RMS with 6 or more terminals
and, if so, what is your experience? Thanks for your time and knowledge.

Kinnard,

Its not too much of a problem. We have a couple that run 6 and another that
run 7 registers on a dedicated XPP machine with 4 gig of RAM using MSDE. In
addition, they have 3 - 4 non register machines for lookups, reports, etc.

Their issues are that they are getting close to the 2 gig database size
limitation. We'll be moving them to SQL 2000 Workgroup Edition within a
couple of months.

It is a bit like Microsoft saying that RMS runs on 64MB memory. It is true
it does but you must be prepared to wait 10 minutes for a screen to update.
I do not recommend MSDE for more than 3-4 connections on a network. Also if
you have a lot of WO, Layaway, Customers, etc... where the network is used
heavily you may find degradation in performance. Past 4 POS go to Full SQL
version.

It's about the size of your database, not the umber of terminals. Also, you
should have a server that can keep up with the database. Plenty of memory
and fast bus & hardrives. No IDE drives.

What about server OS? Does all of this assume Windows Server 2003 or is
XP-Pro acceptable for a dedicated server running MSDE and RMS HQ 1.3?

Thanks,

Dan
