Hi. Does anyone know of a way to import new items into the database from an
excel file? Not the QS Import Utility but something I can use on a daily
basis as we add approximately 50 new items each day.

Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Krista,

There are other tools you can use, for instance you can create a DTS
package, EMS SQL Import Tool but frankly the QS Import Utility should be the
easiest to use.
What is it specifically you don't like about the QS Import tool that makes
you say you can't use it on a daily basis.

Rob,

My reseller actually told me that the QS Import Utility wasn't reliable
enough and that I should only use it on my initial setup. Also, it did some
weird things to my department and categories. Do you use it?

Thanks.

Krista,

We get most of our clients to use it with out any problems.
The reason it did weird things to your Dept and Cat is because it is case
sensitive and has to be the exact spelling of the Dept or Cat name as in
your database, otherwise it will import the Dept name, not the Cat name and
give you an error on the item.
As with any mass changes to the database you want to make a backup of the
database just in case you make a mistake. You can then go back and correct
your mistakes. You'll need to be diligent when creating your import files
and if you use the same format (i.e. the columns of your import files are
always the in the same order) you can save a template of the of your import
settings to speed up importing.

We have a couple of clients that are using the QS Import tool on a continual
basis as you are without any problems, we make them follow some simple
guidelines for creating and importing their files that can not be broken.

EMS SQL Import - cost $39US - This tool can also import from Access, Excel,
TXT, DBF and XML
DTS comes with a full blown SQL Server in the Enterprise Manager
Both of these tools require a strong knowledge of the Database Schema and
relational database management on a whole.

It is funny how they told you that it isn't reliable but to use it to do
your initial setup. I guess initially you don't need your system to be setup
correctly?
Like I said above you need to be diligent with creating your import files
and make a backup of your database before any mass changes and you should be
fine. Lastly, I would not do imports during busy times of the day, try and
do them in the morning or at night.

Rob,
Thanks so much for your help. I tried the qs import and it worked fine
after made the change to my dept/cat fields. The only problem I'm having now
is with my Sales Tax codes...it keeps adding a new one for the items I'm
importing. What field name am I suppose to be using to put the items into an
already existing tax code?
Thanks,
Krista
