I am having some trouble understanding what starts a new batch.

Each night, I have entered the closing amounts, settled credit transactions
and then Z report. Closed POS 2009 and shutdown. In the morning, when I go to
Open/Close to add open amounts, I check batches and find that a batch is
already open and it was opened the day before at the exact time that I pulled
the Z Report.

Am I doing something wrong? Help...I am wasting receipt paper running a ZZ
with nothing in it, if only to keep my batches current for the right day.

Thanks.

Maolin,

There is always an open batch for each register. The next batch opens, when
the previous batch is closed (Z-Report).

I'm not sure about your issue the ZZ-Report, or why you are using. Can you
explain?

Thanks for the response Jeff.

I am new to how some of this works, so bear with me.

I was hoping that I would be able to open and close a batch for each day.

For example,

10/22/09 Opening Deposits at 10AM.

10/22/09 Closing Deposits at 7PM.

Z Report and Settle transactions.

It then, as you have stated, opens a new batch with the dated 10/22/09 at 7PM.

So, the next day (10/23/09) when I open I am using the batch created
10/22/09 at 7PM and not 10/23/09 at 10AM. If I ZZ, then it creates a new
batch with the correct start date and time for the day.

So, am I to understand that the dates, time, etc for the batches don't matter?

I am closed on Sundays, so I have a batch that started when I closed
Saturday evening, and when I closed Monday.

Maolin,

Correct, the dates and times really don't matter.

A ZZ report prints a compilation of Z reports since the last ZZ.

Maolin,

It's not that the dates don't matter, it's just what you want to do with
them. I think most people go by the Closing Date for the batch, and are not
concerned with the Opening Date.

There is no harm in doing what you are doing to create a new batch for each
day. The only side affect would be a bunch of "empty" batches. Also, you
could do this with a regular Z-report. No need for the ZZ.
