Nelson,
You can run RMS on MSDE which is what RMS comes with. But it really all
depends on how many lanes you are going to be running as there is a 2GB
limit to the MSDE, how many transactions you will do in a day and how many
people will need to be accessing the database on a regular basis. Now for
most retailers that have 1 - 4 lanes (this is just an approx), MSDE will be
more than enough, but for some they may need the full blown SQL server. Talk
to a reseller that can evaluate your situation and recommend the best
solution for you. You can find a reseller near you by going on to MS website
or do a google search for 'rms retail pos' and find one of the national
resellers who will help you install remotely.
Regarding SQL Server Express this has not been tested and may not be
recommended to install in a live environment. I have been running it on a
test machine and have not had any problems but that is not to say there
could be some that I have not seen. It would be nice if RMS could run on SQL
Server Express as it has a 4 GB limit and the does not have any throttling
performance issues when getting up there in concurrent users as MSDE does.
