A dumb question I realize but when you buy SQL server is the number of users
how many computers are logging onto the database at any given time? Example,
a file server with a POS station and manager work station would need a 3 user
license? All of my installs thus far have been using the desk top engine.

Thanks in advance.

Zack,

You can have as many back office machines as you want. The dongle only
restricts how many registers you can have running at one time. In your
example, you should only need a one-user dongle.

Good luck,
Matt

I don't think there are single-user dongles (Jeff can correct me on that),
so the 1-3 user would be the one to get.

Sorry for the mix-up,
Matt

For RMS licensing, there are single-user dongles available. If you will
only have one POS station running, that's all you need. Manager stations do
not require additional user licenses.

As for SQL licenses, it is the number of concurrent connections that will
determine how many CALs you need. However this only applies to the
full-blown SQL Server product. MSDE (Microsoft SQL Developer Edition),
which is what is included with RMS, doesn't have CALs, so you can have as
many copies of Manager running as you would like. You only really need the
full-blown SQL Server if your database will be over 2GB in size, and you can
buy that when the time comes.
