inventory approach -- by (bin) location or by department? OlyBikes 12-14-2006

My store is separated into different areas that we have names for. Within
each area we have items from several different Departments. Before RMS we
did physical inventory "by area" so that we would methodically "sweep"
through areas of the store, capturing what was in each area.

I can create physical inventory sheets "by area", but the problem with this
approach under RMS is that a particular item might be in more than one
location (e.g. Aisle 3 on the sales floor AND in backstock). Unfortunately,
there is only one bin location that can be specified per item. There is no
practical way of having different items for each area an item can be found
in.

Printing the physical inventory sheet "by Department" is problematic since
it entails skipping all over the store and still requires knowledge of what
is in backstock.

Is there another option I'm missing?

How do others handle this issue?

Thank you very much!

Larry,

How about creating an additional ILC for each physical location and sell =
the one you pulled it from?

101 is your floor
101-W is your warehouse
101-B is your backstock

Each item can have stock and a different Bin location.

You also need to be careful when you are taking inventory with your =
current situation. As long as you are working on the same physical =
count sheet, you can add the same item, multiple times and they will be =
added together.

If you create a separate count sheet and count the same item in a =
different location, when you commit, it will overwrite the previous =
commit from the other count sheet.

I thought about that, but it seems problematic if I am moving items from =
one area to another. Even if I manually adjust the quantities as things =
are "brought forward" from the backstock to the sales floor, I'd be =
potentially mixing item costs incorrectly.=20

The need for multiple location within a store (at LEAST backstock and =
floor) seems pretty basic to me. I'm surprised that there is no support =
for that built into RMS. I better suggest it!

Right. That'd be bad.

I'll look into it.

Thanks for trying.
