2004 was noticeably slower than 99. But we are now at glacial speed.
I recently "upgraded" to 2007 PRO from 2004 basic, not out of desire
but because I was told I would not be able to get payroll updates much
longer for 2004 basic. 2007 PRO takes several time longer to open or
load my company than did 2004 -- quite annoying! My hardware is NOT
to blame with 64-bit dual core CPU, 1 gigabyte RAM etc. Everything
else I run on this computer is quite brisk. I have been searching for
something to turn off and speed it up but no luck. Ready to ditch it
and get something else but I don't know what.

Ouch! I was hugely disappointed when I "upgraded" from Q2000 to Q2003. I
thought 2003 was a dog (3-5x slowdown for same size data file)! If 2007 is that
much slower, I'll go back to spreadsheets, thank you very much!

Have you installed the R4 patch?

Oh! Allan do tell.
How does one know if it is installed? Is it something one must do manually
or does the auto update take care of it.
Mine is slow but not so slow as to be overly annoying, but then I am not in
all that much a rush most times.

Run QB. Press F2. End of top line on dialog. If it says "R3P" or earlier
you don't have it.

Download the R4 manual patch:
