I wish it was there to simplify updating this field. You have to manually edit each transaction to add this field. If you are in the account register highlight the transaction and click on the "split" button at the bottom of the screen. Alternatively run the Custom Transaction Detail report (modify the report to add the class column to the report) or the P&L by Class report. In either case you have to double click on each transaction in order to add the class value.
