I keep the books for several companies and when I first start QuickBooks
2006 Pro it opens by default the last company I work on. How can I get the
program to present a list of available companies instead?

Choose File>Close Company before exiting the program.

You can create shortcuts to each data file, then use those
to launch QB and load the file.
