I just got a notice e-mailed to me that Quickbooks payroll prices will be
going up substantially. Standard Unlimited Payroll, which is currently $199
/ year will be dropped for new customers (existing customers can renew at
$249 / year). New customers can either sign up for Basic Payroll at $199,
without access to the federal tax forms, or sign up for Enhanced Payroll at
the new price of $349 / year.

Are there any 3rd party payroll packages out there that integrate with
Quickbooks, but are less expensive?

Stop kidding yourself. You know you will pay like a daddy before switching
because of a 50 bucks increase. Personally I'm more concerned with the
increase in gas and oil prices.

I'm going back to QB payroll as of the first of the year.

Don't let them fool you... 3rd party payroll packages could give two cents
for QB 'integration'. The package that 'exports to QuickBooks' is more
trouble than it is worth. And, keeping track of things like sick time and
personal leave is more complicated when your numbers are buried in payroll
reports. While I admit the service saves the time necessary to print and
stuff pay envelopes, I found the trade-off to not be worth it, especially
when an employee wants me to 'double-check' when/how much time off they have
used.

At a low base price of $25 per month for a 'basic' type service, third party
payroll solutions cost at minimum $300 per year, around $50 more than the QB
basic for new users.

My 'beef' with Intuit has never been in the PRICING for the payroll
subscription, but rather the enforced 'upgrades' to the program with the new
Sunset policy.
