Actually, there are people using QB 2004 with a Vista computer without
any problems. You have to switch to compatability mode and it will
work. I don't have Vista, but I think he said you locate the program,
right click on it to select properties, and tell it to run in
compatability mode. OR, search Vista's help if that doesn't work.

Well I've started QB in XP compatibility mode and not only can I still
not export lists to timer, I can barely achieve anything at all
because every time I attempt a task I get this:

My original file on my XP machine allows me to export lists to timer,
so this is definitely seems a Vista issue. I would be interested in
hearing from those who have managed to get 2004 running successfully
if they have been able to exports lists at all, or if they get the
single/multi user error.

Here is what he said about using QB 2004 in Vista:

"What I do to run any program I feel may not run on Vista, I right
click on the desktop icon or on the program in the start menu, click
on the Compatibility tab, and make sure the box is checked in the
Compatibility mode section and use whichever mode I feel I need to run
the program in."

There are SOOOOOO many changes and improvements between QB 04 and QB
08, I'd say spend the $180 and upgrade! QB switched to a sequel
database in 06 which is much better, they added the customer/vendor/
employee centers which are great, and many other improvements. I
recommend clients upgrade at least every 3 years. It helps avoid
these kinds of problems!

Given the screenshot you posted it looks like Timer is relying on IE to run
properly. This goes back to the issue that earlier versions of QB do not
work with IE7. Since IE7 is integreated with Vista you are stuck with IE7. I
think you are SOL running the Timer portion of QB 2004 under Vista.

Now, I have read on other sites that one work around is to set up a Virtual
Machine where the second "machine" is XP. You end up with a dual boot
machine and have access to both XP and Vista. I have no clue as to how it
works or how to set it up that I beleive that might be a possible solution.
So would taking your machine to a computer store, having it wiped clean and
getting XP installed on it. So would upgrading to 2008.

I've not had access to a Vista machine and not seen this recommended on
other sites nor looked to see about "issues", but what about installing
earlier IE? As you say, the virtual machine is probably cleanest
"solution" if upgrading QB or reverting to XP entirely is out.
