QB 2004 Payroll Options Mike Schumann 04-01-2007

I am currently running Quickbooks 2004 with Intuits basic payroll service.
With support running out in a month or two, I'm looking at options.

My initial approach is to upgrade to QBooks 2007. However, I've been
reading about performance problems that people have been having. (My data
file is > 350 MBytes). In addition, I have writen some custom code to
extract data using the QBooks SDK which would probably need to be tweaked if
I upgrade.

Are there any other options I should look at for handling payroll that would
let me stick with QBooks 2004? Note: I have employees in 2 states (MN &
FL); Nothing fancy besides hourly, commission, and some bonuses, but I do
have a SIMPLE IRA.

One option is to skip the QB payroll service and look at outsourcing the
payroll functions to a payroll service. There's ADP, Paychex and Paycycle.
Paycycle is the cheapest of the 3 and you can download directly into QB.
Hopefully that function will remain after QB drops support for the 2004
version. Another option would be to find a QB pro advisor or local
bookkeeper that provides payroll services.

Starting with QB 2006 a new database engine started being used which is much
better than the engine in your QB 2004.

In addition, I have writen some custom code to

You could order the trial version, install it, upgrade a copy
of your data file, then run some performance tests.

Not sure why there is no Pro SKU, but I would order the CD
for the Account Edition for your tests.

No Pro because the Accountant edition will "Toggle" between all of the other
versions. Great feature. I can toggle between the Simple start, Pro and
Premier versions.
