I wouldn't pin my choice to a credit-card terminal that can be replaced for
$25 via Ebay.

The classic, time tested, method is to find the desired software then get
the necessary hardware to support your choice.

I agree I can replace a terminal, but I can't replace Bank
of America because I have a contract with them, and Intuit
told me their POS system will only work if I process credit
cards through them. I might add that the terminal and check
reader cost me close to $300, not $25. But still,
considering the price of the software, the hardware itself
is not the issue.

1. Get on BOA's ass.
2. $300? That's about right when buying from the bank. It's still $25 on
Ebay.
3. Use QB's POS and process your credit cards with a stand-alone terminal.

Does one then depend solely on the POS software to track
inventory? Manually entering all inventory items sold via
journal entries would appear to be more work than entering
sales receipts into QB 2006 as I'm not doing. I don't know
how the POS would fit into my current QB, and the problem
is, Intuit doesn't seem to know, either. They don't have a
clue. Their biggest selling point is what kind of a discount
they'll negotiate with me on the purchase of the software. I
think the Intuit sales rep was selling used cars last week.

Yes, they depend on the POS for inventory tracking. They use LiquorPOS. A
real basic POS software. Easy to understand and setup. Tech support was also
very good. They also have a general POS software that you might find useful:
http://www.merchantsoft.com/merchant_pos/merchant_pos.html.

Total purchases are entered into QB only as COGS. No inventory detail in QB.
We'll do an inventory adjustment at year end to true up COGS & Inventory.
Much simplier for them that way. All cash transactions are run through the
POS and totals posted each day to the various "departments" (beer, wine,
whiskey, etc) via the daily sales journal we have memorized. They have
minimal number of "house accounts" as most of their business is cash or
credit cards but I modified the JE to account for those entries since they
are also posted through Customer center.

They also do not use Intuit's cc service. Theirs is through Sovereign Bank.
