Can QB work with the data files on a SAN (storage area network) hard dirve ?
What settings are needed ? I tried , and failed. The device was a raid disk
on the LAN but not in a PC. I threw all the switches in QB, but nothing
worked.

SAN ?
Not come across that, but I have pur QB database served from a Buffalo
LinkStation Network Storage drive.
I'm running quickbooks pro 2004 BTW.
Might be woth mapping the directory you put it into to an actual drive
letter for each PC accessing it.
Makes it easier to find for both QB and you. rather than having to
specify //servername/datalocation/myquickbooksfile.qbw or whatever.

Is the drive mapped?

What version of QB? Later versions need to be on a computer with the proper
configuration to share. I can see why a 2004 would work on a NAS or SAN,
but not sure about the later ones.
