That is indeed a timely post! Thanks. I could have spent hours tracking
that little culprit down. Microsoft Update did attempt to upgrade .NET
2.0 and the attempt failed.

Downloading the dotnetfx cleanup_tool utility did the trick. I did not
uninstall .net 1.1 and 1.1 SP1, however - only 2.0...

From QuickBooks Help Page...

Windows XP

"Important: If an error occurs while removing .NET, download and run the
dotnetfx_cleanup_tool utility to remove .NET, download .NET from the
links below, and reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, and 1.1 SP1.

Click here to download the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool."

Glad it helped someone. This is not the first time that a .Net 2.0 update
has messed up Intuit products. It seems that this impacts both Quickbooks
and Pro Series users. I have not read anywhere that it messes up Quicken.

More specifically it was triggered, in my case, by a Windows update to
dot-net 3.0. Apparently QB2008 can cohabit with dot-net 2.0 but not dot-net
3.0. It took nearly an hour from paid QB support in Manila to fix my setup.

*******************************
Dear QuickBooks 2008 customer,
We have discovered that a recent Microsoft Windows update may be
triggering problems for some users of QuickBooks 2008 software. When
the problem occurs, QuickBooks does not open.

Common symptoms include the following:
1.The QuickBooks splash screen flashes, and then disappears.

OR

2.On launch of QuickBooks, an error message reports that the Web

Connector has failed to initialize and QuickBooks does not open.
It turns out that the Microsoft update introduced a problem in the
.NET 2.0 Framework.
To resolve this issue, please do not uninstall and re-install
QuickBooks. We do not recommend this, as it will not address
the problem.

The best thing to do is to go to the source of the problem, so you
will need to remove and reinstall the .NET 2.0 Framework. To help
walk you through it, we have provided detailed instructions in our
QuickBooks Knowledge Base that provides some easy to follow steps and
also includes additional links to the Microsoft site:
http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/pages/knowledgebasearticle/1009275

We are continuing to work on this issue and if we find out anything
new, we will be sure to let you know right away.
Thanks for your patience,
The QuickBooks Team
