Sorry, but I am with the OP on this one.

Folks buy company. Company data is held in QB. Folks find software is
pirated.

How do they right the wrong?

Buying a copy of the software, yes... but will it take their data?

You can speak all you like about punishing pirates, but in this case the new
owners are not the pirates. Sure, they can probably sue the seller if the
data is lost, but that does not help them in their day-to-day operations.

The OP is trying to make it legal, and asking for help/advice in doing so.

Best advice is to simply call SlowBooks and say, "I just bought this company and
in doing a software audit I found that the previous owners didn't have a license
for Canadian Enterprise and I want to fix it. What is the current version, how
do I get my data ported to it and what's it cost?" It isn't like SlowBooks
hasn't heard that one before.

Care to cite a source? Was it a conversion utility?
