I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing noise they make as
they go flying by.

I have read about some of the HDCP issues, but I was not
aware how deep this all goes. Ugh.

Tilt bits, hardware disabling, driver hardware polling, loads
of encrypt/decrypt... what a mess. It will be interesting to
see how much this affects regular PC usage (not displaying
"premium content").

Interesting semi-rebuttle here by microsoft:

I have a background in software engineering, and I can think of only three
reasons for QuickBooks telling us to upgrade...

1) QB06 used unsupported features of WinXP, which no longer work in Vista.

2) Vista took away supported features of WinXP causing existing software to
break.

3) This is a marketing tactic from QuickBooks to scare customers into
buying QB07.

If #2 is true, Vista will break A LOT of existing programs, not just QB. If
#1 or #3, this does not cast good light on QuickBooks.

Using 2006 and earlier versions of QuickBooks on Vista may be possible
but it's an unsupported configuration. As a result, you should be
willing to forfeit your 12 months free telephone support (see
https://qbsupport.intuit.com/qb/free-phone-support.do) if you decide to
do this.

Bottom line for business is if you want to run a supported
configuration, either stick with Windows 2000/XP, or upgrade to 2007 in
tandem with your Windows Vista deployment.

But this does not answer WHY it might not work. New releases of an OS, such
as Windows, are supposed to support previous software. (Apple even does
this when they change CPU architectures.)
