Quickbooks database server Tom Del Rosso 01-28-2008

The Quickbooks database server apparently needs an admin to stay logged in
while it runs. I'm wondering if you can make it run as a service or in a
startup script. The fact that it also closes when you close it instead of
minimizing to the tray makes it look pretty lame.

It seems to be designed to search for QBW files on a whole drive instead of
simply remembering the folder you select. Are users supposed to open the
file as before and rely on the manager to act transparently? This mechanism
is strange for a database server. Does it hook file access so that it can
find the file and control access to it whenever somebody opens any QBW file
on the selected drive?

That is way to techie for me. When I open QB it accesses the files
and handles the database server stuff in the background. I don't have
to worry about it.

Hmm. Not here.

Every once in a great while, QB has to be started on our central machine
then closed (I think it lays down a scent) to get the database engine
started. This marking survives re-boots.

QB itself is NOT running on the machine where the database resides (but the
DB engine is).

Then you mean that the DB server utility has to be started sometimes, not
QB, right? Maybe restarting the services would fix it as well, or maybe it
forgot which drive to scan and the drive letter had to be selected again.

I'm learning more about it, no thanks to the paucity of technical
documentation. Now I know that 2007 has 2 services that (should) run
automatically, but 2006 did not, and needed the utility running all the time
instead.

FYI services run before you log on, and can be seen in control panel,
administrative tools, services.
