Truly Multi-User? Rich Morey 11-13-2007

We are evaluating QuickBooks 2008 Enterprise and I am concerned about (so
far) our inability to open a data file in multi-user mode by default, the
message that additional users recieve when they open a data file about
"multi-user" mode, and, most of all, the apparent constant need to start (or
re-start) the "Database Server" software on our network server (Windows
2003) even though the DB Service is started by default.

Can anyone tell me about their experience -- good or bad -- using QuickBooks
in a true multi-user enviornment?

Thanks

Rich

Care to share with us the message your users get?

Hi..

I don't have the exact message and its not an error message. It is a
notification that the file has been opened in multi-user mode and info about
how to switch to single user mode.

Some things have to be done in single-user mode. Attempts to do these things
in multi-user mode will trigger a message.

The message you are getting appears to be a notification to the user that
the file they opened is being hosted by their workstation and not the
server. If data files are located on a dedicated server then hosting must be
turned off on the client machines. The manual states the following:

The server must be the only host for the company files. The server serves

data to other computers (clients) on the network.

Verify that only the server has multi-user hosting enabled. All clients must

have multi-user hosting disabled.

Note If you installed the Database Server only on a file server, you do not
need to

enable multi-user hosting on the server. However, you must make sure that

all clients have multi-user hosting disabled.

?? To verify that multi-user hosting is enabled on the server:

1 Start Enterprise Solutions on the server (the computer where the

company files are located).

2 Go to the File menu and click Utilities.

3 Verify that Stop Hosting Multi-User Access is displayed in the Utilities

menu.

If Host Multi-User Access is displayed in the Utilities menu, the

computer is not currently the host for the company files. Follow the

steps below.

a Click Host Multi-User Access.

b Click Yes when prompted to start multi-user access.

c Click Yes when prompted to close and reopen the company file.

To make sure that your clients have multi-user hosting turned off, follow

the procedure above on each client. Host Multi-User Access must be

displayed in the Utilities menu on each client.
