Unable to set Company ID Larry Spitz 09-23-2007

I am running QuickBooks Small Business Edition 2003.

I am starting a new company and when I bring up the Company Information
window, I can fill in all of the data except the Company ID.

There are two fields: a long one that is blank and a short one which
has "001" in it by default. If I fill in the long field with the company
tax ID number, it doesn't take. In other words, if I close the Company
Information window and reopen it, the long field is blank again. Also form
fields which rely on this data, such as the Tax Invoice continue to show a
blank Tax ID.

I am in New Zealand. Our Tax IDs are of the form NN-NNN-NNN. I have tried
entering it with the dashes, with spaces instead of dashes, as NNNNNNNN,
etc. There is no change. I have an old company and no longer remember
whether I had this same problem when I entered its company information
years ago, but the field is filled in for the old company.

So why can't I fill it in for the new company?

Any help would be appreciated.

Larry

Have you turned on the preference to track tax?

In Australia, this preference needs to be turned on. The Tax ID field
is a text field, and takes spaces for 99 999 999 999 which is our
protocol. The 001 field may be a hangover from the Australian version
where the Australian Tax Office insisted on a branch no in some of the
payroll forms - nothing to do with the GST unless the company ran
branches for that purpose. The 001 was a default needed by all
companies and for those with no branch, it was just ignored.

I hope that helps.

That lead me to the solution. I was already tracking tax, but entering the
Tax ID on the preference page, made it stick.
