Some rumors now contend that earlier versions of QuickBooks (QBP2004) =
can now run successfully on Vista.

I have the upgrade to Vista Premium but still running XP SP2 and QBP2004.

Where are you hearing those rumors? The "official" word from Intuit is that
only 2007 works under Vista. see this page for their official statement:
http://www.quickbooks.com/Helpcenter/Vista/

"QuickBooks 2006 and earlier versions were developed and released before
Windows Vista was introduced and will be adversely affected when running on
this new operating system. Some features, including QuickBooks Payroll
Services, will not work. If you decide to try using QuickBooks 2006 or a
prior version on a Windows Vista computer, please see our "QuickBooks 2006
or Earlier" FAQ page for important information. Intuit will not be able to
provide live support for issues you may encounter using these versions."

I tried to run Quickbooks 2006 on Vista Business. It installed and ran
once, then failed every attempt after that. I finally bit the bullet and
bought QB2007.

All the earlier versions of QB can be made to run on Vista.
However, it takes a great deal of painstaking modifications
to file and registry permissions. This not only has the potential
to open your system up to hacks, it really is not worth the
trouble IMHO.

And when you are done playing with your registry to get QB to work on Vista,
move on to another program. Be prepared to do the same thing. Most software
that is over a year or two old will not work properly (or at all) under
Vista.
