What is needed for barcoding? RobertM 10-06-2006

I am using QB Pro 2006. I have a small mom & pop musical instrument store
with about 500 items in inventory and have been thinking about using
barcodes to enter inventory and at POS. I don't know anything about it at
this point. I've Googled and am under the impression that I'll need a
scanner, scanner software and then import the information into QB. Does
anyone have experience with this and if so, what will I need to do this?
Will it work with QB Pro 2006?

You will also need barcodes on all your items.

Barcode is nothing but a way of using alternative input devices to scan
numbers into your computer. So you need software to generate the bar codes,
a printer (thermal or ink print), labels (many label sizes to choose from),
a scanner to read the bar codes, and also a way of correlating the item
codes in QuickBooks with the bar code software.

Now, most POS programs have all of this integrated, PLUS total inventory
control, customer information, gift cards, gift certificate, credit cards,
cash drawers, pole displays, receipt printers, multiple stores, etc. And I'm
not talking about the QBPOS. You might consider a POS program, or if not,
make sure you purchase hardware that is compatible once you do decide to go
that direction

Good luck

Most barcode readers are connected to the PC via a "keyboard wedge." What
this means is that when the data get to the computer, the computer doesn't
know whether the data came from a barcode or whether it was typed.

So, then, if your computer program can accommodate a string of digits to
identify the item, you're golden.

Don't worry too much about the various symbologies (UPC, 3-0f-9, Codeabar,
etc.). The scanner will sort all that out automagically.
