According to a USA-Today article, in 2006: "QuickBooks, accounting
software for small business, has an 87% share." I would think that
quickbooks has about the same market share today. But why?

Why not use a free alternative, like SQL-Ledger, TinyERP, or GNUCash?
Or a cheaper alternative like Peachtree? Amazingly, even microsoft can
not seem to penetrate Intuit's market share.

But is QB really that great? From what I have read, a lot of people
just hate it.

I have a friend who has a small business, he uses QB because his
accountant will charge 3X as much if the files are not in QB format.
Are there a lot accountants like that?

Or, is because QB is such an established standard? I suppose you can
always find people who knows how to use QB.

Is there anything on the horizon to rival QB?

BTW: personally, I don't have any strong feeling about QB, one way or
the other.

QB is 'user' friendly for people who do not know (or want to know)
about accounting. The problem is when they don't set it up properly
to begin with and then they have problems. The best thing is to get a
ProAdvisor to set it up and train them on how to use it properly.
Once set up properly, it is very easy to use and enter daily
transactions.

Some accountants tend to like Peachtree more since it is more
accounting oriented. However, it was not easy for end users to use.
So, QB took over and PT dwindled to where PT now gives away the
software because no one is buying it.

As for the others, their market share is so low that there isn't much
help or support for them.

No, I don't think there is any real threat on the horizon to QB huge
market share. There are thousands of 3rd party applications available
that integrate with QB too.

Just my 2 cents worth and I do feel strongly towards QB!!! (Although I
used PT many, many years ago).

You presume to speak for all people who put a shingle out that says accountant?

In the world there is surly someone fool enough to try that.

The shingle actually says "CPA" and I don't think he is the only
accountant with a policy like that.
