I'm upgrading from Quickbooks 2007 Pro to Quickbooks 2008 Pro. The
associations for the .q* files (eg. .qbw) still point to 2007 so when I
double-click on a .qbw file, up comes 2007 instead of 2008. What's the
correct way to get the desire behaviour? Do I have to change the association
myself? Seems like something's wrong with the installation process if I have
to do this manually. Thanks.

When you are in QB 2008 and you select the 'old' company file it
should ask if you want to update the file. Then, when you say yes, it
will update it to for 2008. The file name and location will remain
the same so that might be what is confusing you???

Because the user can have multiple versions of the program on their machine
who's to say what the desired behavior should be. If you hover above the
icon for the file long enough windows will display the version lasted used
to open the file. Many accountants can have the latest version 2008 but the
majority of their clients can still be using an earlier versions.

You did understand that you had to uninstall 2007 before installing 2008 if you
wanted the file associations to be as you describe. Otherwise they are correct.

That's an interesting statement. I tried double clicking on a 2007 file and
it errored out. I could double click on a 2008 file and it would launch
correctly. A check of the file associations in windows explorer shows
Quickbooks Laucher as the program to open the file. I would have expected
either the last program installed OR the version last used on that file to
open up.
