If you download your recent transactions from TIAA-CREF using web
connect, the asset values of your CREF accounts will be updated. I'm
not certain how much lag time there is on the asset values.

Since I am interested in only two CREF securities, I just copy and
paste the values from the performance page at http://www.tiaa-
cref.org/performance/retirement/index.html. That page is usually
updated three or four hours after the NYSE closes, although it is
sometimes longer. I find this easier than using web connect to
download transactions just to get current values.

I used to have to navigate to the correct CREF web page, but
this morning (using Q2008) I am taken directly to the correct
download page when I initiate a download by clicking the "Update
Transactions" button at the foot of my TIAA-CREF account
register.

As you're probably not already activated for download, I think
you need to logon to your TIAA-CREF account, click the "Manage
My Portfolio" tab, then scoll down to the "Download Account Data
to Quicken" link in the "Take Action" section. Clicking the
link (or the "Go" button) should take you to the "Download Data"
page.

Once you initiate your first download, telling the process to
"Open" the downloaded data (or Save, then tell Quicken to
"Import" the "Web Connect file"), you should be able to assign
the download to your TIAA-CREF account (if Quicken doesn't do it
for you).

That's one of the problems. Somehow, the right accounts are not accessed.
Maybe I have to remove online service connection between my TIAA-Cref
accounts and then reinstitute them. But that seems like a lot of trouble
right now.

I cannot tell you how to get the problem, but I call tell you it is
not possible to download the CREF units -- what you can download is
TIAA-CREF mutual fund data -- big difference. According the tech at
TIAA-CREF I spoke to, the units do not have any symbol or CISP both of
which are required for downloading into Quicken or getting even a
quote say on Yahoo.

Since I only use this to track value for purposes of net worth, I
decided to delete the account and make a single entry to show all the
deposits made by a former employer. Not elegant, but functional.

Thanks to all that posted, I always learn from other's thoughts.

TIAA-CREF is very user unfriendly; and they put out information
that is not correct.

A ticker symbol is not required to download prices or
transactions to Quicken. (My bonds have no ticker symbol, but I
have no trouble getting transactions and prices for those bonds
downloaded from my financial institution.)

(And TIAA-CREF actually assigns dummy ticker symbols to their
"securities".)

I think it is possible that a CUSIP number may currently be
required for downloading transacations and prices to Quicken.

If this is true, I believe a "solution" is possible ... because
I think the OFX specs allow for other identifiers than CUSIP
number ... but it would probably take some co-operation between
the financial institutions and the personal financial software
manufacturers to make it work.
