I recently converted to Quicken 2006 and am very unhappy with what the
program shows me on the screen. Let me explain:

I have tried using automatic downloads of transactions and have found
I was spending too much time and effort making the downloaded
transactions look like the way I like to show my transactions. So I
have abandoned all automatic transactions updating.

So I do NOT want to do any automatic transactions or updates on-line.
The only thing I might consider doing on-line is stock-price updates.
But even that is not a necessity...I don't own enough different stocks
to bother with this. It doesn't save me enough work to do.

Should I go back to an older version of Quicken to get away from all
the online crap on my screen, or should I just turn off all online
update stuff where possible and grin-and-bear the update stuff being
on my screen? Does the new Quicken offer me other worthwhile features
that make its use desirable?

Are you sure that Q06 is causing the downloaded transactions to be formated
differently than the way you want them to be? I'm using q04 and Bank of
America seems to free-format their transactions that now include the date of
the transactions and makes matching transactions impossible. I have stopped
trying to manually enter transactions and use the downloads 100%. If your
bank offers other formats to download such as excel or printable text
format, try looking at that format to see if the problem is with your bank
and not Q06.

i use Q 06 deluxe and generally enter transactions and use the download as
a check on that. Works well and does not mess up formats. sometimes we
download ahead of entering manually and then we just make a few changes in
payee etc. all in all it works great. what you might do is turn off
"autoname" or something like that which might be changing the payee's name
to a standard one, which perhaps is whatyou do not like. I really cannot
imagine the issue you are having.

I am using Q2005 and have turned off the renaming rules option (its
under the online menu). I had some trouble with getting this turned off
and stay off at the start but finally was able to make quicken
"understand" that I know how to name my transactions and did not need
its help.

The naming of the transactions is independent of Quicken, it comes from the
banking or transaction processing centers. Quicken only displays what is
provided by the banking provider. With that in mind, at least Quicken
provides the renaming rules, which are a reasonable solution to the
sometimes cryptic merchant or transaction descriptions provided by your
bank. I don't think your issue is with Quicken, it's with the banking and
credit industry at large. If you're willing to live with the transaction
descriptions as provided by your bank, then you can disable the renaming
rules in Quicken, which may be your best bet for avoiding the frustration.
