Asset Allocation - Which total is correct? Ron 01-18-2009

In the Asset Allocation Report there are 2 totals. The one at the top
under the pie chart or the total at the bottom of the report. There is
about a 4% difference in the 2 for me.

When I add up the total in the report section, I get the total that is
under the pie chart. But the total in the report section is about 4%
higher.

Which one is correct? And what the heck is going on? When I do a
Portfolio Value Report it agrees with the total that is at the bottom of
the Asset Allocation Report.

I end up with 2 sets of value for the same securities on the same day.

Since no one has responded to this, I thought I would update.

My original note was about Quicken Premier 2007. I contacted Quicken
Tech Support and was asked to check out the 2009 version.

I have now done that. Quicken Premier 2009 is much more accurate, if
you can believe a spreadsheet.

Quicken Asset Allocation – Graph        -0.84%
Quicken Asset Allocation – Report        0.39%
Spreadsheet        0.00%
Quicken Portfolio Report – Graph        0.00%
Quicken Portfolio Report – Report        0.39%
Spreadsheet        0.00%

These are usable amounts.

The Asset Allocation Report still has some problems. In my particular
case, the allocation to International Stocks is understated by 3.5%, and
the allocation to Large Cap Stocks is understated by 1.2%.

Asset Allocation is a lot like horse shoes and hand grenades. This is
close enough for what I am doing.

I don't think I've ever run an asset allocation report in Quicken but
decided to after reading your post. I ran asset allocation reports on
the 4 files I maintain and in two cases the totals differed by $.01,
in one case the difference was $.02 and in the other the difference
was $.00. The totals agreed (with one or two penny differences) to
the total of Investment Accounts in a net worth report. Percentage
wise the largest difference was on the order of 1/100,000 of a
percent. This was with Q Deluxe 2007.

Have you tried customizing the report to ensure that every single
account, security, action, etc. is selected?

Does seem odd that the two totals would differ by that much.

Tom -

I uploaded a spreadsheet showing my asset allocation normalized to
$100,000. You can view the differences between the different Quicken
Reports and the spreadsheet. It is under the heading "Will the real
Asset Allocation please stand up?"

The errors are small and the AA results are usable as is. This saves
the extra work of building a spreadsheet.
