I have Quicken 2005 Delux and I want to disable the automatic check
numbering when I enter a transaction in my checkbook. I have several auro
pays that are deducted from my checkbook and giving them a check number
messes up my checkbook when I have to enter a real check.

I tried deleting the check# and it messed up the check amounts.

I'm not totally sure I understand your problem.

I don't know of any automatic check numbering option in Quicken,
and I can't imagine why clearing the check number field would
affect the amount field.

But, if you have memorized a payee with a check number, Quicken
will assume that subsequent *new* transactions for that payee
are checks. You can avoid that by either deleting payee from
the Memorized payee list permanently, or deleting the payee then
memorizing the same payee without a check number. (And if that
is your problem, you probably got it by automatically memorizing
payees, an option you might want to turn off.)

For automatic payments, set the check number to 'EFT' (Electronic
Funds Transfer.)
