Auto Update Misses Transactions? R. Fry 10-23-2008

My Q2007 Deluxe (R5) auto-update is not seeing transactions in my accounts,
at times, although it reports that the updates were "successful."

When I check these accounts a minute or so later using a manual web connect,
several transactions that should have been downloaded are there, and I can
download them into Qkn directly from the FI website.

Is this some kind of setup problem, or does Qkn 2007 have some issues with
doing this accurately?

TIA.

When you say FI, do you mean generic financial institution or specifically
Fidelity Investments?
If the former, I find that Express Web Connect is usually 1-3 days,
sometimes a whole week behind my credit union web site.
Fidelity should be Direct Connect, and they tend to update in the evening,
so transactions during the day won't download for me till night time.
HTH.

To expand a bit on Bob's comments: if you are using Express Web
Connect, you should know that it only gets access to new
transactions once every 24 hours. Depending on what time of day
that access occurs and what time of day you download, your
download could be 23 hours and 59 minutes out-of-date.

Plain Web Connect, does not have that restriction. [Nor does
Direct Connect.]

I first use Quicken One-step Update. I don't know if it uses Express Web
Connect or something else. But quite often it misses picking up
transactions at my financial institutions, which are just banks.

Then shortly after trying Qkn OSU I find that I can access those missed
transactions by directly logging into the bank's website and manually
loading them into Quicken.

I'm trying to find out if this is normal behavior for Qkn 2007 (and later).

Thanks

Easy enough to determine: open the account to the Overview tab
(or button), click the "Change Online Services" button in the
Account Attributes pane. If Quicken says you're "Connected via
Direct Connect", you're NOT using Express Web Connect. I think
Quicken will use the phrase "Express Web Connect" to describe
your connection if that's how you're connected, but I don't have
any Express Web Connect fi's to verify that with.

Please clarify if you are talking about an all-or-nothing
difference. When transactions are "missing", is it ALL
transactions that you could download using plain Web Connect?
Or were some transactions successfully downloaded using One Step
Update, and others had to be retrieved using Web Connect?

It's normal behavior for all versions of Quicken that offer
Express Web Connect to only get new Express Web Connect
transactions once every 24 hours. Plain Web Connect
transactions, on the other hand, are available the minute the fi
puts them on their web site (if they are not "pended"
transactions).

If you're using Express Web Connect, you can fairly easily
determine if it is the built in delay that is creating your
problem. Next time you find there are transactions at your fi's
web site that did not download, do NOT try to download them
immediately by initiating the download from the fi's web site.
Wait 24 hours and try another One Step Update to see if that
picks up those transactions.

If you don't use Express Web Connect, I don't know of any reason
why you wouldn't be getting all your transactions, but Quicken
is still limited by what the financial institution supplies ...
and each method of download (Direct, Web Connect, and Express
Web Connect) has the possibility of being fed different
transactions by the financial institutions or by the defined
limitations of the method.

If none of the "eligible" transactions are being downloaded, I
don't have any other ideas. There have long been reports of
users downloading transactions, seeing an indication that
Quicken received the transactions, but the no transactions being
available in the "Accept transactions into register" window.
There have also been multiple workarounds offerred; some work,
some don't.

If some "eligible" transactions are being downloaded (appearing
in the "Accept transactions into register" window) while others
are not, you can usually determine whether the "missing"
transactions were in the downloaded data but not offered in the
Quicken "Accept transactions into register window" ... or
whether the transactions were not in the downloaded data at all.

But that's a bit more work (too much work for some), and not
worth going into unless there's reason to believe that all the
transactions were passed to Quicken but Quicken only delivered
some of them to you.
