A multiple hardware failure prevented me from using my LAN to place a
backup copy of my Quicken 2008HB files from my XP machine to my new
Vista so I installed the program on the Vista machine and was finally
able to place a copy of the working file (not the backup) into the
Quicken directory installed on the Vista machine. From what I=92ve read
over the years here, this should fire right up without incident and
permit me to carry on without missing a beat. Am I right? If not, what
do I need to do?

It might be best if you could validate a copy on the old machine first. I
use shortcuts to the relevant qdf file to start quicken. Thereby you can
use multiple quicken data sets easily, without loading one data set, then
switching and loading aanother one.

That is basically what I did when I got a new machine last year. I copied
the entire quicken data folder including backup folder to the new computer
and opened the file from there. No problems. I have also copied the current
files back to the old laptop because I wanted to switch what machine I was
using for Quicken.

I have copied the files over the network as well as used a USB flash drive.
Made no difference.
