I am using Q2004 and I have numerous categories and subcategories that are
usually the same name or type but just a variation of the name.

I want to use standardized categories and subcategories and to
incorporate/import them into my system.

Once imported, what would be the best or most rapid way to edit all
transactions to fit into these standardized categories?

What process do users go through to decide how a transaction fits into a
category and subcategory?

I think you're going to find it difficult to follow your suggested procedure. As
you say, how are you going to decide what category a transaction belongs to if
you ignore your current category?

Personally, I would start with what you have, and use Quicken's Recategorize
feature. This will allow you to rename categories, and you can attack the
project as time permits.
