Categories List in Q2008 - yech! Andrew 09-24-2007

I broke down and bought Q2008 after all; thinking that the 'new' method of
tagging transactions might hold some interest. I do mess around the
categories and classes, so I thought perhaps this might be one area in Q2008
that holds promise for me.

One thing I immediately notice is that the categories list no longer shows
you the number of transactions that each categories has associated with it
without having to click on the minireport that is available now - and at
that, it's one a time ; not the entire set (with scrolling) one had before.
The other thing that I don't like is the 'Show Unused Categories' filter.
In that panel, it's not immediately obvious (like it was in Q2007) that if
you have are using some categories like A:B:C and A:D:E even if you don't
singularly use category A, but indeed have sub transactions (B, C, D, and E
in the example), then it appears that you can simply delete category A and
take all the others below it without realizing it. Q tells you that
category A is not being used - strictly speaking, that's true, but it should
have some indicator like there are valid children below it. Yes, I know
that it asks you if you wish to merge the subcategories, but one shouldn't
have gotten that far.

Anyone else bothered by this? That panel seems a large step backwards from
what Q2007 had.

YES!!! Me too... I just caved and got Q2008 myself and I found the very
same thing.... I thought I must be missing something and unfortunately I
guess I'm not. Really strange as they hyped these very features you mention
for the 2007 release.

I'm very disappointed in Intuit for this one.

I am surprised that this wasn't brought up by some of the beta testers
before Q2008 was let out of the door. Oh well. "The Lord taketh, the Lord
giveth" (or something like that) regarding features/capabilities in Q !

Yes, I really liked this feature in 2007 and didn't realize it was gone
till I recently got around to cleaning up my categories list, as I do
periodically. It was such a helpful feature, I really miss it. I still
am glad I upgraded to QP2008, but I hope Intuit brings back the
quickview of how many transactions use each category. It really makes
quick work of managing categories, especially when I need to make mass
edits, as I've had to do the last couple years to significant life changes.

Regards,

Margaret

Yep - I want that back too. But I must say that it seems that assigning
tags and catagories does seem a lot easier in Q2008 with the drop downs and
seperate 'tag' field.
