Using Q2006P
I want to move a category to be a subcategory of another. The option
is offered only on those that are already subcategories. Edit only
lets you change the description and the tax form. Am I missing
someting?

Sounds to me like you are trying to change one of QW's "hard-wired"
categories - those that begin with the underscore such as "_DivInc".

No, you can not move one of these to a subcategory. Not sure why this
is.

Other categories/subcategories can be readily interchanged as you
desire.

If you are correct that the OP wants to "move" an underscore
category, I think there is a good reason for Quicken preventing
the action. Doing what the op wants would - effectively -
delete the main underscore category (Quicken expects a "main"
category of "_DivInc" to exist when Quicken tries to categorize
investment account dividend transactions). When you can't
delete the category directly (you can't delete Quicken
investment categories if you have investment accounts with
transactions using that category), you shouldn't be able to
delete it indirectly.

For example: The process would - in effect - delete the category
"_DivInc" and create a new "category" something like,
"MyCategory:_DivInc".

Also, changing transactions with a Quicken created category
beginning with an underscore, to some other category would, it
seems to me, screw up many of Quicken's reporting capabilities.
How would Quicken accurately report "Dividend Income", if the
"_DivInc" category for transactions was changed to
"MyCategory:_DivInc"?

Thanks for these responses. They answer my question clearly. Now I
need to find a way to produce a report I want.
