Changing cash representation Jeff 07-06-2006

Using Quicken Deluxe 2006, I have 2 groups of accounts with the same broker
(one for my kid and one for me) and I keep them in different files. In my
kid's Quicken file's investment account, when I click on the "Cash" link at
the bottom of the Summary view tab, a window pops up and I am told by
Quicken that:

"The cash in your account is held by your broker in a money market fund.
Quicken is currently assuming that the value of [money fund name] represents
your cash balance.
Select the Change button to change how Quicken handles the money market fund
representing your cash the next time you download."

This is fine with me. BUT, in my own Quicken file, when I click on the
"Cash" link as above in an investment account, the window that opens up only
gives me the option to adjust the cash balance but not the option to change
the way Quicken handles the money fund.

I prefer the way Quicken handles the money market fund in my kid's account.
Is there a way to change how Quicken handles the money fund in my own
accounts? I looked in Quicken's help under "cash representation" (the name
of the button in my kid's account) but found no way to change my account.

Anyone know how?

Thanks.

Jeff

I think you just didn't take this far enough; but I can't be
sure from your explanation. There is another route.

Open the investment account to the Transaction tab. In the
Quicken menu, click Investing > Investing Activities > Update
Cash Balance. At the bottom of the resulting dialog box should
be a button labelled, "Cash Representation"; click that and
elect to "Change". The next time you download to that account,
you should get the option to have the mm fund treated as cash.

That's precisely my problem and my dilemna. When I do what you told me, the
window that opens up does not include the button labelled "Cash
Representation"! There is a blank space where it should be. I wonder if
that because
a) that option is not available for IRA accounts in Quicken.
b) It can only be chosen when the account is first created.
c) The broker does not make that option available for IRA accounts.

It's normally offerred when first downloaded, I think (but my
understanding is that should not prevent the option I
suggested). Try Deactivating, the Activating the account for
transaction download.

I would look for *any* differences between your Quicken account,
and your child's account: both in their Quicken definition and
their real world status.

I have a Smith Barney account that I used to check this: I have
downloaded many times to that account, but I was still given the
option to change the Cash Representation. It's possible you may
have something else wrong; maybe a Validate would be worth
trying.

This sounds like a difference between your account and your
child's account; and I think this could well be a difference
that would cause your problem. I'm not sure that this is a
difference that's controlled by Quicken; I could not find any
mention of that being a limitation from Quicken's point of view.

Thanks for replying. I'll keep looking. All these accounts are from Smith
Barney too.
