I am not able to download one of my brokerage accounts into Quicken and
have been inserting the activity for this account manually. However, I
just discovered on the account's website that I can download into
either Excel or as a CSV file. Which should I do so that I can then
transfer this information into Quicken, and how do I transfer it into
Quicken once it is downloaded?

I have Q2005 Deluxe and Excel 2002.

Thank you.

I think you may find the process frustrating, and possibly not
worth the effort; QIF files were never a very satisfactory way
to get investment data into Quicken, and matters have only
gotten worse beginning with Q2005.

To get your data into Excel:

1.) Download from the brokerage (if they truly offer an Excel
file, that should do the trick, but either a true Excel file or
a CSV file can be opened in Excel).
2.) Use the free Excel macro, "xl2qif" (Google for it) to
convert the Excel data to a QIF file
3.) Pre-process, then import, the QIF file using instructions
found here:

I believe you will find that the names of your Quicken
securities must match exactly to the names downloaded from your
fi. You can modify the names in the downloaded data anytime
prior to importing to Quicken, or you can change the names in
Quicken.

John,

Thank you for your very clear and easy-to-understand instructions. But
I think what you said above is most important. Since this particular
account does not trade very much, it seems easiest to just continue as
I have been doing, downloading my Fidelity accounts through Quicken and
manually adding any trades or dividend receipts for this Bear Stearns
account.

I download quotes from Yahoo! Finance every week in CSV format. You can
import the prices directly into the portfolio page...

Thank you for your advice. However, the problem is not downloading
quotes, which I can do, but downloading transactions in that account
(buying, selling, and income).
