Going from Q'98 to Q'08.... maybe. PortStG 02-22-2008

One thing I really like about Q98 is the simplicity of configuring
numerous sets of Data Files to run separately from one set of Program
files. I have six separate Data files, one set of Program files.
I just set up a Desktop shortcut pointing to each Data Files' .QDF
file, no matter where that set is located, and voila! it runs off the
one program located in C:Program Files folder.
I like simple :-)

Will Q2008 work the same way?

Frankly, Q98 has all the features I need. But I recently changed from
one XP machine to another and now Q98 has no more Backup capability.
No matter where I try to "Backup", it tells me the disk is full and to
try another. So I'm hoping Q'08 will resolve that problem.

I'm assuming my Q'98 Data files will automatically and painlessly
convert to Q'08, correct? If not, somebody stop me before I do
something rash! ;-)

Anyhow, first I want to make sure I can easily set up Q'08 with one
installation of program files and still run numerous sets of data
files, like I do with Q'98.

TIA

I think it will. Someone has mentioned that just in the last week or so.

I went from '99 to '08 by doing a backup and restore..........and then went
back to '05 because the '06 and beyond reports are "upside down".

You should be able to do a manual copy for backups since, I think, 98 has
everything in a single QDATA file.

I would have gone back to '99 but, alas, no installation disk.

Yep, I've been copying. No prob. But I stay more up to date on my
backups when it's easier to do one each time I exit a session.
You've brought up something that hadn't occured to me though. I was
just assuming that '08 would keep its files all in a single QDATA
folder like Q'98. There goes another mark on the Con side of my
Pro/Con list.
Thanks,

I can't think of any reason why having your Quicken data
contained in more than one Windows file would be a negative.

You can still start Quicken by double-clicking on the .QDF file.

As far a copying Quicken data from one place to another; having
your data stored in multiple Windows files doesn't interfere
with this either. Just put your Quicken data files in a folder
by themselves; when you want to copy, copy the folder.

One very useful benefit of having the separate files is that
security price history lives in a file of its own. When
problems occur with the price history - as they do for some
people, it is (now) a fairly trivial matter to overcome them
since the prices are all in a file of their own. There is also
at least one other type of Quicken problem that can be more
easily resolved due to having the data in separate Windows
files.

aha! I mis-read Ken's message,
Q'98 uses sets of 5 files in each Data folder. So copying "Folders" is
what I'm doing already. If I can do that with Q'08 as well, then I'll
erase my check mark in the Con column ;-)
(I was thinking Q'08 scattered the File sets among several folders,
which would be rather unhandy).
Thanks for keeping me straight.
