How to do this with the budget? akmh 03-22-2008

Hello,

In setting up my personal budget, I would like to exclude all transactions
that have a certain tag. Namely, I would like to exclude all business
related expenses (which I tag with w/business) from my household budget
setup.

How do you do that in Q2008? I don't seem to find a way.

Thanks
AH

Q2008 works like previous versions (except "Classes" are called
"Tags" in Q2008) and the Budget report works like other reports:
Exclude tags using the Tags tab in the Customize dialog for the
report.

Thanks for the reply, but what you are saying only works for report. What I
am doing is creating a budget. Here is an example of the problem that I am
having:

For example I have the following category:

Dinning

Depending on the reason for my dining, it could be:

Dinning/Business
Dinning

When creating a budget, I want to ignore all transaction with a tag Business

While in the create report you can select the tags, in create/save budget
you can only select the categories and not the tag. The only solution I
could see is to have:

Business:Dinning
Dinning

Which I dont like because I would be adding too many unnesseray categories.

Any ideas?

BTW, the budget part of quicken can really use some work. I have used
Quicken for the last 15 years (and I love it) and would like to be able to
use it more with budgets, more planning functionality. Now I find it limited
in that front.

Thanks for any feedback and recommendation

BR
AH

Your approach is flawed.

There is no way to specify "class" ("tag") in a "budget" ... and
no need to do so.

You can create multiple budgets (Quicken has no way to know what
a particular budget is for ... and Quicken doesn't care). You
can create one budget for your personal expenses, and another
budget for your business expenses.

Naturally then the key is that you must create one Budget Report
for your personal expenses and a second Budget Report for your
business expenses. Customize each report to use the appropriate
categories/classes and the appropriate budget (you can tell the
Budget Report what budget you want it to use ... in the
Customize dialog).

Thanks John, I see the report functionality now. Thanks,

In creating the budget though (automatically), I still find it usesfull to
be able to tell quicken not to average in any transactions with a given tag.
This will make it much easier for me to create a personal/business budget as
you suggested based on my historic spending pattern. This functionality is
not there (or I don't see it)...Anyhow, I am eager to see what changes to
the budget functionality will be coming up in the next release.

Thanks for your input,
AH
