I meant to add that if you want to enter categories in
transactions at the time you enter them, you should not tell
Quicken to "Automatically memorize new payees" (Quickfill
preferences).

Thanks. I have had partial success. I went to preferences and unchecked
"recall memorized payees" and "automatically memorize to the calendar list."
The option that seemed likely -- that is, "complete fields using previous
entries" -- was already unchecked. If I leave both of these items
unchecked, I still cannot get to the categories that I want to use for this
person, apparently because his name was previously memorized. I
experimented with *new* names, and I can avoid the problem I mentioned for
them (although unfortunately can no longer find a category by typing in a
letter; I must manually scroll through the list). But I did not "undo" the
damage for the person I really need it for, who does a variety of types of
work for me. Do you have a suggestion for that?

Again, thanks for your help!

Don't do this; those options are called Quickfill and they are
what allow Quicken to start filling in names after you have
keyed one or more characters.

They are also what allows Quicken to take information from your
memorized payee list and fill in amounts, categories and memos
according the contents of the memorized payee. If that isn't
working as you wish, the "solutiion" is usually to get rid of
the memorized payee.

One thing you probably do want to turn off is the automatic
memorization of payees. That is done on the same preference
screen where you made the above changes.

See above.

You haven't said whether you deleted all memorized transactions
for that payee. That's the place to start.

Sorry, I misread this before. I think my previous comment was
correct, but might be misleading.

Don't uncheck "recall memorized payees"; do uncheck
"Automatically memorize new payees", which, I believe, will
automatically stop memorizing payees to the calendar.

Apparently I don't understand how memorizing a transaction is done. I
simply enter a transaction and I do not click on anything to memorize. Is
there a setting that I may have set that is causing all transactions to be
automatically memorized? I suspect there may be because everything seems to
fill in automatically. Can you direct me to a location to check?

Thanks for the help.
