(Deliberate re-post to put "Import QIF" in Subject heading)

John Pollard has often posted instructions, and links; and as humbads posted
back on 17 January, 2007, it *IS* possible to import QIF files in Quicken
2005, 2006, 2007.

http://www.somacon.com/p468.php

I can personally vouch that this works in Q2006 and Q2007, others can do the
same for Q2005.

Bob

P.S. It's a shame that the newsgroup doesn't have a "sticky" or "Topic of
the Year" feature :-)

Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for something like this for some
time to use with Quicken 2006 Premier as my employer 403b account is with
AIG Valic that only supports QIF. But I'm not sure I did it right. Does one
only need to add the header at the top & add it once?
On the import I didn't have the same things come up. Since AIG valic was of
course not listed as an import account choice I just left the drop down
destination account selection at all accounts.
Then executed the import. It came up with unrecognized security which I
selected yes.
Then it asked to create 2 accounts Buy & sell listed under the top left in
where the Cash Flow accounts where checking accounts are listed. Then it
went on to ask. Transactions found for buy account. Import these into Buy
account? Transactions found for sell account. Import these into sell
account? Transactions found for buy account. Import these into Buy account?
Then after
I selected yes for all 3 but then had to do that sequence repeatedly which
since there were many took forever.
Then after a while it came up with Transactions found for the account aname
I entered & did I want to import those into the it along . So now I had to
go through a 4 select yes sequence followed by next. After doing this
repeatedly for 20 min I hit cancel & had nothing to show for it except empty
buy & sell accounts.
Is there a way it does this automatically or did I miss something?

Below is how my file looked. After the initial account header which I added
each of the transactions has its own header separated with the ^. I only
included a few of the one listed in the file.

Thanks,

Barbara

Barbara:

I should have been more precise in my language.
I SHOULD have written that I have imported Cash, Bank and Credit Card QIF
files.
I had never actually imported Investment QIF files.

I tried the snippet you posted, and could only get the transactions to go
into a Cash file, and that was by removing the extra NBuy entries.

Q2007 does create the appropriate Investment file, but imports into whatever
Cash file I choose from my drop down.

I'll play around with it a little more tomorrow, but so far, I can't do it.

The work around for importing to checking, savings, credit-card
and investment accounts assumed you would elect to import to a
specific allowable account. It suggests creating such an
account if one does not already exist. Do you mean you do not
have a single cash, asset or liablity account in your file? The
work around expects you to select one of those account types for
the import. When you select "all accounts" for the import, you
must have different data in the qif file. If you want the qif
file you have now to work, you need to import to a specific
account.

Having said that, I have to add that in my recent testing I have
been getting the distinct impression that Quicken has been
changed since the workaround was posted, so that the workaround
does not work as it used to ... if at all. You may have better
luck than I, so I would certainly try to follow the directions
exactly and see if your import works. If not, see comments
below.

If you can not successfully import to a specific account, I
suggest you continue to try to import to "all accounts", but
that you make at least one more modification to your qif file:
just after the first caret record (and just before the first
date record), add a record that reads, "!Type:Invst". I was
able to successfully import to an investment account doing this
but I did notice something peculiar ... don't know whether you
should expect to see it or not.

When my import finished (I got the "Done" button), I did not see
any transactions in the "Transactions" tab for the account,
causing me to think the import had failed. But I happened to
notice that the Summary tab for the account showed the
securities I had wanted to import (I imported to an empty
account). I could not, and can not explain why the transactions
do not show up in the Transactions tab following the import but
they are clearly there (they also show up in an Investment
Transaction report.)

To get the transactions to appear in the Transactions tab, I
exited Quicken, then started Quicken again ... and there they
were.

Good luck.
