A placeholder is an investment transaction; specifically an
"Adjust Share Balance" transaction.

Heading down this path will not "get rid" of the placeholder;
the best you can hope for if you approach it this way is that
the placeholder will get "hidden" (once you have entered all the
historical transactions for it); but it's effects will remain
forever.
Instead of clicking "Enter cost"; delete the placeholder
transaction. Either click the "Delete" button at the right side
of the transaction, or right-click the transaction and click
"cut transaction".
If you entered *any* transactions for the security in the
placeholder, with dates on or before the date of the
placeholder, those transactions will never correctly affect the
cash balance in the account. Those transactions are the ones
with "N/A" in the "Cash" column and they must be deleted and
re-entered.
