I have to upgrade from Quicken Deluxe 2004 (so I can download my
transactions from Scottrade). I'm not familar with Quicken 2007 at
all. Was it a good version or a dog?

While there is a vocal group that thinks Q2007 is a dog, there
are others who are not nearly as harsh in their judgement.
Ultimately it will be up to each user to decide how well a
version works for them, as not all users will have the same
experience. I personally see very few of the Q2007 problems
reported by others when I test with it.
I think you should consider something else. New versions of
Quicken come with a 60 day money back guarantee, which should
give you plenty of time to decide whether the product is right
for you. I would check with Intuit to see whether you can still
get Q2007 with that guarantee; if not, I would go for Q2008
where you definitely should get the guarantee.

I've been using it all year, without any problems. I'm happy with it.
I've been a Quicken user since about 1990, and typically upgraded
about every other year. By and large, I've found that all the versions
of Quicken over the years have been good. I don't remember any dogs.
Occasionally I've experienced some problems early on, but an update
has always soon come out to fix them.
I've also found that each version has some improvements over the
previous one, but that there are fewer and fewer valuable improvements
each year. After a while they just run out of things to improve.
Unless something happens to change my mind, I'll probably skip 2008,
since it doesn't look like there's anything new that's significant to
me. The major new thing seems to be PayPal support, and that's
meaningless to me.

I upgraded to 2007 from 2004 for a similar reason. I liked 2004 and 2007
is fine. The only problem with 2007 that I have is that it is optimized
for viewing at 1024x768. I prefer 800x600. If you are normally set for
1024x768 it will look very good. If 800x600, there are a few buttons
that you have to click on that are difficult to see. These are the ones
that appear in the lower right hand corner of the screen. On my monitor
these buttons are half off the screen. It's no big deal.

I upgraded from 2004 earlier this year and have had little or no problems
with it.
I agree with John's suggestion to upgrade to 2008 since it is about to be
released.
