After 19 years of being here in California I've accepted a position in
Dallas, TX. This means I need to switch banks and my current bank is
Union Bank of _California_ and I don't think they operate in Texas. What
I need is a good bank that works with Quicken online *direct* download
into Quicken. I don't want no stinking web pages or web connect as they
are just a bother to me.

I have 4 (count 'em) 4 checking accounts with UBOC, 2 that I use for
business, my regular high volume checking account and one that I use for
my daughter's savings account.

What good banks exist in Texas that can satisfy my needs?

Thanks.

I use and recommend CompassBank. Almost everything is free. Bill pay,
online banking, and even ATM is free.

They have Dallas locations.

Check out compassbank.com.

(No I don't work for them or have a vested interest)

Hmmm... ATM free? So if I go to a Wells Fargo ATM and withdraw money
from my new CompassBank account I'll be charges $0? Seriously?

Or are you saying that only if I withdraw from a CompassBank ATM will I
not get charged for used of their ATM? If so big deal! Name me a bank
that charges to use their own ATM!

Hmmm... Interesting... From
http://www.compassweb.com/personal/checking/atmoffer.cfm

How do ATM rebates work?

With Compass Free Checking -- and most of our other checking accounts --
you get free ATMs. Not just our ATMs free, but you get what we like to
call our Triple-Free ATM^® policy. That is:

1. We don't charge you to use our ATMs.
2. We don't charge you to use another bank's ATMs at any ATM network
nationwide.
3. We even rebate the usage fees those other banks charge --
including international service fees for foreign ATMs.

They also apparently have some software that seems to do essentially
what online updates do:
http://www.compassweb.com/personal/online/faq/compasspc/

Thanks man. This bank seems tech savvy. I'm gonna have to call them.

BTW: Do you use them? If so what do you think of CompassPC? How does it
compare with what Quicken already offers with Online Update?

Yes the ATM is free, even if you use it at stop and go's or other banks.
You save your receipt and mail them in with a deposit slip to the main
office. They deposit the ATM fees back to your account. (The only catch,
if you want to call it that, is that you don't do this at your local
branch - you have to do it by mail)

You don't have to use CompassPC with Quicken. You have direct connect and
one step update same as other banks.

One thing I use CompassPC for is to view the checks. That's free also.
Wife doesn't write in always and you can view both front and back.

I also set up joint accounts with my college kids and I can transfer
allowances and expenses from my account to theirs. I think I could also do
that through Quicken, but I just go to CompassPC.

If everything is free, some ask how can they do it. I haven't looked, but I
hear they have horrendous overdraft charges to help pay for the free stuff.
Seems fair. With Quicken and CompassPC no one should overdraw from lack of
knowledge. They do offer overdraft protection, for a fee.

Man I was hoping to keep away from having to use those ancient things
called letters!

I rarely overdraw due to lack of knowledge. I overdraw due to lack of
funds! Sometimes you know your going under but there's not much you can do.
> They do offer overdraft protection, for a fee.
I have a $5K overdraft. Can I get something like that there?

Also, anybody else have any other recommendations for online savvy banks
in Dallas. Compass Bank seems pretty cool but I'd like to explore all my
options...

And Marc, thanks for the suggestion...
