Manually matching transactions j.stammer 11-30-2007

I've been using Quicken for years but v2007 is pretty new to me (Home
and Business version).

I don't understand how to manually match a transaction. I downloaded
my data and in my weekly paychecks, I go in and enter all the items as
a split (taxes, 401k, etc.). Then I press accept. Well, I've had ~6
months worth of transactions to do this to and for some reason they
didn't all "accept." Maybe I hit "enter" instead, but regardless, the
transaction was actually entered into the register, but I have the
matching one in the downloaded ones, but it will not match to the
register.

I click on it and clicked on edit (which I finally found), then "match
manually" I only have the choice of two transactions in that dialog
box and they're not even close to being a match.

What am I missing here?

Thank you,
Jo

I can't follow the steps you took with the downloaded
transactions, so I can't tell you what you might have done
differently.

But the Manual Match process excludes transactions that have
already been downloaded - either as "New" transactions or
"Match" transactions. So if the register transaction you want
to "manually match" has already been downloaded, it won't appear
in the manual match dialog.

You can tell whether an existing register transaction has been
downloaded by right-clicking it, then holding down CTRL while
left-clicking "Copy Transaction". If you see a check mark in
the "Downloaded" box and a valid date in the "Posting Date",
that transaction was already downloaded (or modified by the user
to make it appear to have been downloaded).

The downloaded ones are still in the downloaded transactions area
where I'm accepting/modifying them.

I go to one that's been downloaded, then modify it (editing the
split), and then 'accept' but there are many that haven't been
accepted (that's where I think maybe I'm hitting 'enter' instead ... I
really don't know why they're not accepted). So now there's one that's
in the register ... like a copy of the downloaded one I guess, plus
the original downloaded one in the downloaded transactions area.

Should I just delete the one from the downloaded transactions?

I'm sorry, but I'm still not able to understand what you are
doing.

The best I can tell you is that there is useful information in
the downloaded transaction that you may never see.

At least a portion of that information is the fact that the
transaction was "downloaded" (so it will never again be subject
to being "matched" to another downloaded transaction), and the
"Posting Date" of the downloaded transaction (which Quicken will
use for a "reconcile" when you reconcile to a "printed
statement").

You can always accept a "New" downloaded transaction, learn what
you want from it, then modify a previously existing transaction
to seem as if it was the downloaded transaction. [Right-click
the newly Accepted downloaded transaction, hold down CTRL and
left-click "Copy Transaction", then note the "Posting Date" ...
do the same to the existing register transaction and assign the
same Posting Date and check "Downloaded").

Part of the problem is I don't understand either. Normally I go
through my downloaded transactions (in this case it's pay statements).
I edit the splits to put in the correct amounts for taxes and such and
either click "accept" or hit "enter." For some reason, as I'd gone
through and done this, not all of them were actually accepted. They
were entered into the register but remained in the downloaded
transactions as if they were still waiting to be accepted. I thought I
could match them which was my original question, but I guess that's
not the case.

So, I tried what you just suggested. I accepted a couple of downloaded
transactions and went to find the download data and they both say
they've been downloaded and they both have the same date of posting.
They have different IDs, however.

I'm just not understanding what's going on here. It's like a duplicate
in some ways, but not completely.

Oh...when I'm editing the splits, this is based off a memorized
transaction so that I have all the information (categories) in there,
just need to edit the amounts. Could that be part of the problem?

This problem didn't happen to all of them though, just sporadically.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Jodi
