I'd make it a point to click Accept following the modifications,
not Enter.
Better yet, make the paychecks scheduled transactions that
remind you to enter them no later than the day your paycheck
will be downloaded (and as early as you know what the split
amounts will be). You can "enter" that scheduled paycheck
transaction as late as when the actual transaction has been
downloaded and is waiting to be Accepted - just make sure it is
entered before you attempt to process the downloaded paycheck
transaction. Once the scheduled transaction is entered in your
register, the downloaded transaction should match it and the
downloaded transaction can be Accepted with no modifications.

Better would be to note when you have modified a downloaded
transaction and it appears in the register but does NOT say
"Accepted" in the "Accept transactions into register" window.
Take a look at the transaction in the register to see if it has
the Posting Date.
