I was forced to upgrade both Quicken for my personal use, and QuickBooks for
my business, from the 2003 versions I was comfortable.
I am not impressed at all with the new layouts. Today, I went to enter a
memo for a check in Quicken. With the 2003 version, I had my register
options set to one-line display, and, when I needed to add a memo, clicked
the options tag for a two-line display. With the 2006 version, clicking the
options tab brings up a menu for register preferences. The menu does NOT
show an option for two-line display.
So, how do I create and display memos in this 'upgraded' version?
TIA

Lisa,
Try the View menu - it's at the bottom.

I like the way you used "upgraded" in quotes. The way they handle this
is definitely worse than what they did a decade ago. You need to go to
the View drop-down and deselect one-line display, and then reselect it
after you put in your memo.
Back in the DOS version, if you used one-line display, then for the
transaction you were dealing with, it automatically showed both lines,
with the category on a third line, and let you do whatever you needed
to do. Then if you went to a different transaction, that one became
three lines, and the one you finished (and all others) were one line
again.
Intuit's response at the time was that converting to Windows was a big
job and you could not expect all features to get there right away.
They said to give it time. Presumably, few of the programmers there
today had anything to do with the product back when they said that, and
it's not even on anybody's list anymore. The best I can suggest is that
you go to Submit Feedback on the Help and tell them that you would like
them to restore this missing feature. If enough people ask, they are
more likely to listen. As things stand, I no longer use the one-line
feature because it's too awkward.
Ironically, there's now so much extra room on the screen with today's
resolutions that they could easily squeeze in a memo field in the one
line display without affecting very much. It used to be that you had
about 32 characters each of the payee, memo, and category displayed.
Now in one-line, you get about 50 of the payee and of the category. I
don't know about you, but most of my category names are 4-10 characters
long and everything would fit in one line just fine. Quicken currently
lets you type values that are longer than what displays anyway, so it
would not be a change if an occasional entry did not display completely
without clicking on it and moving your cursor, so I can't see why they
left it out. At least they could have done it with a mouseover.
