Need to Re-create Investment Account AlanW 08-01-2006

My thanks to "CW" who gave me great advice in a previous post. I am
using Q05 Deluxe. Unfortunately, the backup file that listed all the
currently held securities was deleted in error (my fault).

The problem started when I deleted the backup file. Upon the
subsequent download, two years worth of transactions were downloaded.
This created many duplicate records and altered the validity of the
account. Attempts to manually delete these duplicates (and possibly
some valid transactions) only made the problem worse.

Is there a way I could do the following:

1. Retain the Account Set-up info; delete all remaining transactions;
then download all available transactions from Vanguard?

2. Make a manual adjustment to reconcile with current statement?

Any other suggestions on how to fix this would be welcomed.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi, Alan.

> The problem started when I deleted the backup file.

Could you PLEASE clarify whether you also deleted your AUTOMATIC BACKUP
files?

As I explained in the other thread, Quicken automatically makes a backup
every week. Even if you deleted EVERY manual backup that you've made, those
automatic backups should still be there. Unless you specifically deleted
all of those, too, but why would you do that? In your previous message in
the other thread you said, "Unfortunately, my only valid backups occurred
after I deleted the files." Even if your only manual backups were after the
deletion, you might still find some earlier automatic backups that would
have at least some of the data and settings that could save you a lot of
work.

Do you have a QuickenBackup folder? What is in it?

And please continue this conversation in the same thread. Starting a new
thread each time makes it hard to follow the context.

Thanks RC for trying to help. I use Q05 Delux. My goal is to correct
one Vanguard Investment Account.

1. I did delete the older back up files - because I thought the most
current would be all I needed.

2. I do have a backup folder, however, all the backups are subsequent
to the problem.

3. I have 8 other accounts - all of which are ok - since I also handle
bill paying for a family member.

4. The Qdata file contains all the accounts. I only need to correct
the one.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi, Alan.

You STILL haven't said clearly if this is the QuickenBACKUP folder which
contains Quicken's AUTOMATIC backups. :>( "A backup folder" could be any
folder, including the one where you keep your manual backups. And "all the
backups" might mean only the ones that you have created.

How many weeks' automatic backups are there? For more future protection,
you might want to set this to 5 or more; the max is 9 and the default may be
2, but I don't really remember. (Edit | Preferences | Quicken Program |
Backup: "Maximum number of backup copies") One of the first things I do
each time I reinstall Quicken is set this to 5. Then I always have over a
month of backups, even if my manual backups get corrupted or deleted.

If all your automatic backups are too new to include the uncorrupted
Vanguard account, and if all your earlier manual backups have been deleted,
then I don't know how to help you. I suppose you will just have to recreate
that account manually. Since I have no experience in downloading investment
accounts, I'll retire from this thread and let others help you. Good luck!

To clarify, my regular back up files and the automatic backup files
were deleted in error. It appears I will need to re-create the file
manually. Thanks for trying to help.
