Using this version faithfully for years ... then suddenly begin getting this
error. Restore backup - validate, super validate (no reported errors) ...
but a few transactions - and bam - get this error again (when I go to
perform a backup). Restore backup again. Record a few transactions -
backup after each. Everything appears fine. Shut down Quicken - bring it
back up - just hourglassing ... menu is present - but nothing else. I go to
most frequently used data files - and change to backup file - then change
back to active data file - get this error. I've tried numerous combinations
(tried making copies ... going back month at a time to isolate when the
problem begain - recently .. no luck) - in an effort to isolate the issue.

I installed Quicken on another machine .. and same issue. So the problem
seems to be with the software and/or data files (i.e. not a system issue).

Files:
QDATA.QDF file is 15 Meg
QDATA.QEL 35K
QDATA.QPH 2.4 meg
QDATA.QSD 173K
QDATA.QTX 4K

I'm running on Windows XP SP2.

One other noteworthy item - I wrote some of my own code to get updates for
my stock prices (to csv) - then import those prices into Quicken. Been
doing it since they disabled quote updates. Read poor reviews of subsequent
releases - so decided to just stay where I was - happy with the version -
and work around the restriction.

I've tried deleting combinations of these files - and been unable to isolate
the problem.

So I appear to have a working data file ... but some issue is causing it to

Any ideas as to what the issue is? What are my options to rectify the
situation?

Neither a Validate, nor a super-validate, will address errors in your
QPH file.

So, you might try renaming it and see if the problems go away. If
they do, just re-build the QPH.

Tried that ... deleted the QPH file. Imported updated stock prices -
everything seems fine. I make a few transactions, backup after each. Seems
fine - then randomly - go to do a backup - and get the error again. Tried
deleting the QTX and QEL files too.

I guess next up - uninstall / reinstall. Not a huge fan of Quicken right
now.

Have uninstalled/reinstalled. Defragged .. validated, super validated, gone
down to just qdf file ... continue to get this error. I am reluctant to
simply upgrade and hope this goes away.

What other options do I have? I've never used QIF - but can I export
existing account info - and start over - and then reimport my account info?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a problem several times that would not go away with reinstall,
etc. It was a hang, or crash to desktop. I worked with Intuit support
for about 3 hours before they gave up. I tried the file on another
computer, and it worked OK, so I was pretty sure that it was not the
source of the problem. If possible, I'd recommend that you try that
before trying what I'm going to suggest.

I deleted the directory "c:documents and settingsall usersapplication
dataintuitquicken". (You can just rename it to old_quicken if you
don't want to delete it.) I then did a "repair install" of the program.
That created a replacement directory, and the files within. That
resolved the problem completely.

The directory is a place where Quicken keeps temporary files. I believe
that one of the files was damaged when I had added a new account, but
online setup had failed.

Note that this is for Windows XP. It may be different on another version
of Windows.

Hope this helps...
