Q2006 basic: keeping trying to uninstall itself Bernie Cosell 08-26-2007

It is a real pain that intuit didn't make Q2006 XP-aware and
XP-well-behaved. Ever since I installed Q2006 I've had the problem
[unfixable AFAICT] that if I double-click on a QDF file quicken will NOT
start, but instead I get a "preparing to install" dialogue box. If I just
start Quicken directly, it all works fine and I can open whatever QDF files
I want and quicken handles them just fine.

NOW: Usually if I'm quick about clicking 'cancel' no harm is done, but if
I'm not, the $@$@#$% thing tries to uninstall quicken [or something like
that]. Of course it can't [since I'm running out of a limited acct], but
it does screw up the install [I have no idea what it *does* manage to mess
up!] so that the next time I try to run quicken directly I get the "Quicken
is sick" pop, assuring me that my data files are OK but the program files
are messed up. SO: I dig out the Q2006 CD and reinstall and tell it to
"repair" the installation.

That usually works OK, but the other day I wasn't fast enough and got my
Quicken install messed up again... and I did the "repair" thing and quicken
seemed to all be OK.. *EXCEPT*... when it goes to backup the quicken files
as it is exiting, I get the @$@%#$%@#$% "preparing to install" dialogue.

Does anyone know what's broken with Quicken's way of dealing with XP that
causes these "preparing to install" dialogues? Is there a workaround or
some way to fix it? Just remembering not to click on a QDF was something I
could ignore.. but quicken trying to trash itself EVERY time I exit is
going to be a real hassle.....

IS Q2007 or Q2008 XP-aware [that is, if I just bit the bullet and bought a
newer version, would that make all of these problems go away???] I notice
that there's no Quicken "basic" any more -- would the "starter" be pretty
much the same thing? Hmm... I guess not: in the 'comparison' chart, the
starter edition has "I do not need to import existing Quicken Data", and I
sure do [over a decade of it!]... So I guess they've forced me to upgrade
to "Deluxe".. oh well..

/Bernie

Well, my Quicken 2002 has always worked fine in XP Home.

} Well, my Quicken 2002 has always worked fine in XP Home.

If you're running XP/Home, you're probably running Quicken out of an
administrator account. It works just fine as admin [basically, the
Windows-98 mindset]; the don't seem to have gotten the XP stuff right,
though, because it is a bear to run it from a limited acct...

Bernie, yeah, now I understand. Guess that's why Intuit goes on and on
about running Quicken in an Admininstrator account. Sorry, I can't solve
this one.

A Google search turned up a few message board comments regarding the
'preparing to install' dialogue. Try looking here

For the OP in that thread "Assigning temporary Admin privileges to my normal
user account and then doing a clean install worked"
